Thinking beyond the ordinary
Marta Colón de Carvajal (Esporles, 1982) and Juan Palencia (Madrid, 1981) used to work at leading architecture firms in Switzerland, designing office buildings and museums all around the world. They needed to live at a slower pace, and work on more personal projects, and so they decided to move to Mallorca and set up their own studio in 2017.

“The most stimulating part of our profession is developing different projects. If all you build is houses, you end up being pigeonholed”, Marta and Juan admit. This is something they have eschewed, after moving in 2017 from Basel to Banyalbufar, a tiny village by the sea in the Serra de Tramuntana. Today, they are capable of designing anything from a pavilion in Switzerland using recycled material or a concert hall in Lithuania, to unconventional homes measuring forty-five square metres. “When you do something big, you feel like doing something small afterwards, and vice versa”.
