A primal need
For Irene Pérez (Barcelona, 1976) and Jaume Mayol (Montuiri, 1976) designing a school in Switzerland, a church in Belgium or a house in Mallorca all requires the same perspective: “What do we have, and what can we do with what we have? That is what traditional architecture has always been based on”, say the founders of TEd’A, in their architecture studio in Palma.
“We won the competition in Switzerland because it was the most Swiss of all the schools presented”. It was that simple. “A very local project, with an approach like that of a peasant farmer: what resources do we have, and how can we use them to respond”.
The project Irene and Jaume referred to is Orsonnens school in Switzerland, and it has received numerous international architecture awards. “Choosing the materials according to the climate where the project is carried out. That is the basis for everything”.
One step further
Tradition is a word that comes from Latin. It means seeing beyond things. “The traditional models give us centuries of experience, learning and knowledge. Of trial and error. We learn from the past in order to go one step further”. Reducing the carbon footprint is [...]
