Neighbourhood barbershops

On the afternoon Toni Martorell (Palma, 1963) went to the cinema to see The Man Who Wasn’t There by the Coen brothers, he decided he wanted to photograph the barbershops of Palma - the traditional ones. So he asked for two weeks leave from work, slung his Hasselblad camera over his shoulder and set off to portray those austere, poorly-lit businesses where the everyday life of any given neighbourhood ran its course. And their peculiar owners and customers, who could well have been extras in the movie that inspired these images.
