Telling stories

FEver since she was a child, Julia Fullerton-Batten (Bremen, 1970) knew she wanted to be a photographer. Today she lives, creates, thinks, produces and travels all over the world exhibiting her work and receiving a numerous awards, including the prestigious All About Photo 2021.F

Sometimes it takes Julia weeks, and most of the time months, to think up, produce, research and plan each image in her series. “But when I finally press the shutter button, I feel happy to have achieved something I have been waiting to capture for a long time. It’s very cathartic and hugely gratifying, a feeling that never ends, because going to print and seeing my work exhibited around the world is even more exciting”.

Her father was a great fan of photography, a passion he inculcated in her. She studied photography and was an assistant to five photographers and, after winning a competition, “I started to develop my artistic work. My first project was Teenage Stories, which was published as a book and exhibited all over Europe. It really helped me to establish my reputation as an art photographer”, she says.

Her latest project is Looking Out From Within, which tells in images the stories of how our fellow citizens have dealt with the restrictions of recent months due to the pandemic.
