When nature is the work

Where there was a wood pulp factory in 1889, there now stands the biggest open-air museum in northern Europe.

FFJust over 60 kilometres from Oslo, the capital of Norway, lies the Kistefos artistic complex. The main peculiarity of this cultural destination is that it is immersed in the midst of nature. The surroundings are a fundamental part of what is exhibited inside it, as both the Randselva river and the dense adjoining forest play an important role in understanding the idiosyncrasy of the works on display.

Kistefos is comprised of an industrial museum, two art galleries and a sculpture park, one of the most important in Europe for contemporary art. Every year the galleries present new exhibitions by renowned national and international artists, whilst the sculpture park is expanded with one or more pieces. Today, the park contains 46 sculptures by artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Claes Oldenburg or Anish Kapoor, among others.
